Several years and many projects after DPR constructed one of its first projects in the region for Ionis Pharmaceuticals, Inc., the San Diego office came full circle by completing this ground-up 176,000-sq.-ft., state-of-the-art research facility. Developed by BioMed Realty Trust, Inc., the build-to-suit project was the first structure in the Carlsbad Oaks North Business Park development. The facility has become the corporate home of Ionis Pharmaceuticals, an industry leader for developing programs focused on treating cardiovascular, metabolic and severe neurodegenerative diseases, and cancer. Highlights of the facility include flexible designs, laboratories, an outdoor meeting and dining area, and site walking trail. The interior and exterior spaces seamlessly integrate to give an open campus feel to the facility, as well as maximize function density and take advantage of the beautiful ocean views.
When DPR was awarded the project as a design-assist contractor, the site had not been nailed down and the design was still conceptual, but Ionis and BioMed Realty needed a contractor that could move forward quickly. The project began with a highly accelerated preconstruction period that included selection of a 12-acre greenfield site. The team held three days of design charrettes that brought together all the key decision makers to hammer out a plan for the design and move forward with construction. With a schedule of just 13 months, not accounting for one of the stormiest winters to hit San Diego, each team member brought a “can-do” attitude and determination to achieve the project goals, whatever it took. The project was still completed on the original date established prior to breaking ground.

“Like DPR, Ionis is committed to forward-thinking design solutions and reducing its carbon footprint,” said Jeff Cole, project engineer on the Ionis Pharmaceuticals R&D Facility. “We incorporated numerous sustainable features throughout the campus and were careful to adhere to the Ionis principles of embracing openness and defining science as the center of their mission.”
