Expanding healthcare services in rural Tennessee

HCA Healthcare’s TriStar Horizon Medical Center ICU Expansion | Dickson, TN

11,665-sq.-ft. horizontal expansion and 3,200-sq.-ft. renovation houses a new 14-bed ICU wing, with the ability to expand to 16 total beds in the future. The project scope also included new support areas such as a waiting area, nurses station, breakroom and mechanical room. Logistical challenges include tie-in to a working hospital, relocating main utility lines servicing the hospital and a tight site for new deep foundations to support the structure. The project was completed with zero recordable incidents.

The exterior consists of new EIFS and brick to match the skin of the main campus façade. The project team implemented cutting-edge prefabrication technology on the interior space, in the form of prefabricated patient headwalls and a prefabricated electrical room—delivering both cost and time savings to TriStar Horizon Medical Center.

The DPR team is constantly looking at ways to better partner with our clients. On one occasion, DPR reached out to the facility to borrow walkie-talkies during steel erection to ensure there were no crane conflicts with incoming life flight helicopters. The facility was able to notify DPR within a half hour of a helicopter approaching so we could cease all work and create clear skies for incoming or outgoing life flights. The team worked through two campus-wide domestic water shutdowns, three natural gas shutdowns, six electrical shutdowns, and campus-wide vacuum and medical air shutdowns.
