About The Project
Faced with aging infrastructure and equipment well past its lifespan, Bethesda East embarked on a mission to modernize its Central Energy Plant (CEP) and critical support systems. Years of exposure to the nearby saltwater environment had taken their toll on vital components—from chillers and electrical systems to emergency generators, air handlers, fire pumps and more. This ambitious project called for the full demolition and ground-up reconstruction of the CEP, all while keeping the existing plant fully operational. The result is a state-of-the-art facility designed to deliver reliable, efficient performance for years to come, ensuring the hospital can continue serving the community without interruption.
The new CEP project consists of:
- Cast in place concrete structure with precast concrete & curtainwall envelope system rated for Cat 5 hurricane impacts
- (4) New 2,500 kVa FPL Transformers & Associated Powell-Esco Switches
- (3) 2,500 KW Generators to provide critical, essential, equipment, life safety and normal power for the entire hospital
- Associated ATSs and switch gear
- 66,000 Gallons of Fuel Capacity and associated day tanks
- N+1 boilers and heat exchangers
- (3) 1,500T Chillers and redundant associated pumps and cooling towers via a common header system
- New med gas & tank farm consisting of an 11,000-gallon bulk oxygen tank & 1,500-gallon hyperbaric tank
- Facilities office and meeting areas as well as storage & facilities workshop space
