DPR Construction, Inc. Adopts Buzzsaw.com for Project Collaboration & Management

DPR Construction, Inc., a forward-thinking global commercial contractor and construction management company, has become one of the first general contractors to embrace the Internet for project collaboration – and has adopted the Buzzsaw.comTM collaboration applications as the company standard.

Based in Redwood City, Calif., DPR specializes on technically challenging projects for a wide range of industry leading companies. By using Buzzsaw.com’s easy to use, flexible tools over the past year, DPR has streamlined the building process to save time and money on multiple projects.

“Tracking all the details and changes involved in the types of projects we manage, especially the larger scale ones, becomes even more crucial when working under the aggressive construction schedules that have become typical in our industry. Buzzsaw.com applications are easy to access and use, enabling us to drive efficient project management,” said Eric Lamb, executive vice president of DPR Construction. "Our interaction with a single painting contractor may not be very complex or even require much communication, but multiply that one interaction by two dozen projects, each with multiple contractors for electrical, civil engineering, cabling infrastructure and so on. One lost detail in any of those relationships—something as seemingly minor as paint color—can lead to delays in the construction schedule. Utilizing Buzzsaw.com is another way in which DPR is proactively working to better serve its customers.” "

Fast Growth Demands Flexible, Easy-to-Use Tools
Since it was founded more than 10 years ago in 1990, DPR Construction has grown from less than $1 million in annual revenue to more than $1.9 billion in 2000. Established to challenge traditional construction practices at the time, the company embraced technology from the start and first developed its own in-house collaboration system. DPR is now focused on taking advantage of efficiencies derived from managing project communication and documentation via the Internet. After evaluating several options, DPR selected Buzzsaw.com. In particular, the company chose Buzzsaw.com's collaboration applications – ProjectPoint, Bid Manager and Construction Manager – because they enable building teams to store and share project drawings and documents in one, central location. Using Buzzsaw.com applications has already helped DPR to significantly reduce the time spent distributing project-related documents and alerting team members to changes. The applications also allow DPR administrators to automatically track all activities within a project and monitor site activity in detail. This level of visibility into the critical activities and interdependencies within a project was not available to DPR project managers prior to the adoption of Buzzsaw.com’s technology.

Because of the scope of projects, DPR has new team members that join different projects at various times throughout the construction process. The straightforward set up template on the Buzzsaw.com site allows the administrator to add new users in a matter of minutes. Project administrators simply upload the new members’ contact information—such as name, address, email, phone—Buzzsaw.com automatically emails the new user with instructions on how to log on. From the administrator’s perspective, the whole process is quick and easy.

Word of Mouth: Success Can Be Shared
DPR has also introduced the Buzzsaw.com ProjectPoint application to its clients and Bid Manager to its subcontractors. Building owners are given access to the ProjectPoint site so they can view the building drawings and monitor the progress of the construction. Once the building design is complete and construction process is ready to begin, DPR uses the Buzzsaw.com Bid Manager application to send out invitations to bid (ITBs) to subcontractors. Before using Bid Manager, DPR relied on the standard process of faxing as many as 500 invitations to bid on a typical job to its subcontractors and waiting for responses by fax or phone. Bid Manager provides an efficient online alternative to the ITB process, allowing DPR to quickly organize bid invitation lists and receive responses online.

“As more and more owners and contractors are seeing the value of online collaboration services, the advanced functionality of Buzzsaw.com becomes a selling point for general contractors like DPR Construction,” said Anne Bonaparte, co-founder and senior vice president of sales and business development at Buzzsaw.com. “Buzzsaw.com applications connect project teams and enable increased profitability throughout the design, construction and property management process.”
