DPR Construction and WorldViz Open Virtual Reality Showroom

DPR Construction, a leading national technical builder, today announced the completion of a virtual reality working exhibition at its Redwood City headquarters. The showroom, a partnership with WorldViz, brings advanced 3-D immersive visualization to building owners and the architecture, engineering and construction industry. A leader in turnkey interactive visualization and simulation solutions, WorldViz provides technologies that allow anyone to walk through a full-scale digital model to better understand layout and design features pre-construction. This holistic view of a project enables construction and architecture companies and their clients to make changes in the early stages of design, thus reducing time and resources spent on changes in the field or potential rework.

“Giving our customers a way to have the most realistic experience they can get outside of walking through a finished building enables valuable feedback and ensures that the end users are getting exactly what they want,” said Atul Khanzode, director of construction technology at DPR Construction. “DPR has invested heavily in Integrated Building Information Modeling and Virtual Design and Construction processes to help deliver more predictable outcomes for our customers. The partnership with WorldViz and the new virtual showroom offers teams and our customers a great way to visualize and contextualize projects, and address issues much sooner through rapid virtual prototyping.”

Peter Schlueer, President of WorldViz, comments: “Immersive 3-D is a whole new way of experiencing and understanding designs. It lets people reach consensus earlier and bring projects to completion in less time. Industry leaders like DPR Construction use our immersive visualization systems because they provide tangible returns through more efficient planning and construction. We are thrilled to work with DPR to help lead the way into the future of virtual construction.”

The WorldViz Architecture Interactive showroom features a variety of 3-D immersive and semi-immersive display technologies using head-mounted display and motion tracking systems. The center piece is the WorldViz wide-area walking system. Once users put on the head-mounted display they can walk around and make adjustments to a construction project in real-time.

For a less expansive walk-through, the virtual reality center also has a multi-projector setup option that includes a two-sided corner shaped CAVE environment. Instead of a full head-mount users wear light-weight 3-D glasses to interact with the display.

DPR will begin using these technologies with projects that currently have virtual 3-D mockups.
