Short Shots Spring 2000
And the Winner is…
Quality and safety have always been hallmarks of DPR, and recently the Dallas and Seattle offices and a Northern Virginia jobsite were rewarded for their achievements in these areas.
Panattoni’s Bristol-Meyers Squibb project, near Mt. Vernon, Ind., was a triumph for DPR’s Dallas office. This project raised the bar on tilt-up construction quality with DPR taking extraordinary measures to ensure the slab for the 612,000-sq.-ft. warehouse was laid with absolute precision and incredible speed. Pouring 12,500 cubic yards of concrete in 17 days, DPR was still able to complete the job with only an 1/8-inch variance. For their efforts, the DPR team not only had a satisfied customer but was given an Outstanding Construction Award by the Indiana Ready Mixed Concrete Association.
For the second year in a row, DPR’s Seattle office has been honored with an AGC Outstanding General Contractor Award for its safety program. 1999 marks the fourth consecutive year with zero lost-time accidents, and the Seattle office continues to move forward, ensuring that safety remains a value. From extensive training and pre-task planning to informal weekly “all-hands” walk-throughs and twice-daily safety audits, DPR Seattle is already working to win a third consecutive AGC award next year.
The COX Merrifield Head-end Facility in Fairfax, Virginia received DPR’s “Safe Site of the Quarter” award for the first quarter of 2000. Herman Diebler, the regional manager for Fairfax, and Rodger Bryant, the Virginia region safety manager, presented superintendent Kirk Wagerman with the award. According to Bryant, “Kirk embodies the DPR philosophy of maintaining a safe workplace. He prioritizes jobsite safety by conducting daily safety walks, documenting the walks, and making safety an agenda item in every meeting.” Wagerman went above and beyond the call of duty in protecting workers at the jobsite, retesting wires, even after the electrical company had stated they were safely locked out, and preventing a potentially life threatening incident in the process.
Salt Lake City Work
DPR’s Phoenix office has recently joined the Micron, Lehi Division Facilities Expansion Team in Lehi, Utah as construction manager for negotiated projects and as a consultant on the overall development of the 2,100-acre site at the base of the Wasatch Mountains, just south of Salt Lake City.
“Currently DPR is managing all pre-construction estimates, analyses and MEP designs, as well as overseeing all site-work, substation, chiller and central utility plant upgrades,” stated DPR’s Paul Lapierre. Implementing High Performance Team standards to measure job performance, DPR is committed to meeting or exceeding all owner expectations. Current projects are right on schedule, and DPR has just been awarded a new $35 million phase.
Building Up & Down the West Coast
From Seattle to Newport Beach to San Diego, DPR has paved a solid relationship with Pasadena, CA-based Alexandria Real Estate Equities. Beginning with a 1996 tenant improvement in one of its Seattle properties, Alexandria has returned to DPR for projects all along the West Coast, including a 74,000-sq.-ft. build-out in San Diego that is currently under construction.
Alexandria has been impressed with DPR’s proactive approach in working with tenants and neighboring property owners. “DPR makes my job as a builder/developer a lot easier,” commented Vin Ciruzzi with Alexandria. “They are very owner friendly but not owner reliant.”
