Oracle Office Building Project Shows Power of Teamwork
Second Project at Rocklin, CA Campus Features Energy Efficient Materials
DPR and the rest of the design, construction and management team are demonstrating the power of teamwork as they collectively push towards the successful completion of a second building on Oracle’s Rocklin, CA campus by the May 2002 completion date.
“I’m very pleased with DPR’s performance and with that of the project team,” comments Oracle Real Estate Project Manager David Imel. “In particular, [project manager] Jon Bloom has done an exceptional job of keeping me in the loop and effectively communicating with the project team. As of right now, we are trending slightly ahead of schedule and under budget.”
The two-story, 120,000-sq.-ft. office building project is the second structure DPR has constructed for Oracle at the business-to-business software and services provider’s Rocklin campus, which is located in one of the fastest growing regions in the state of California. Once completed, the new facility will provide room for an estimated 650 Oracle employees working primarily in finance and administrative support capacities. The campus has been master planned to eventually accommodate up to four buildings on site.
The tilt-up structure will feature a lobby open to the second floor and will incorporate one of Oracle’s signature exterior design elements - a circular curtain wall structure with reflective, blue glass. The exterior skin is a combination of tilt-up construction and a punched-opening window system with custom-painted aluminum frames and high-performance, energy efficient, Viracon insulated glass.
Interior finishes will include imported Italian stone and custom metal ceiling panels. A unique high-performance elastomeric paint system is being applied over the concrete wall panels to simulate an EIFS texture. With an open office floor plan, illumination to the workstations in the 140-ft. wide by 420-ft. long building will be provided by energy efficient, high-output T5 lighting fixtures. Three high-end custom stairwells provide another architectural highlight, including a radiused stairwell off the lobby and two end stairwells that feature 20 ft. by 20 ft. skylight wells.
The building design and construction incorporates several energy efficient materials. In addition to the high-performance glass and T5 light fixtures, the structure also features an energy efficient, single-ply PVC roofing system over rigid insulation. By using this roofing system, Oracle will earn a rebate from the California Energy Commission’s Cool Savings program for peak load reduction.
“Given the energy crunch that we have experienced, it’s not surprising that many of our customers are looking for ways to make their facilities more energy efficient,” comments DPR Project Executive Craig Greenough. “As general contractors, it’s our job to bring all the options and associated costs to the owners so that they can make informed decisions at the preconstruction phase. That’s exactly what we’re doing at Oracle.”
DPR broke ground in June 2001 and is operating on an aggressive 11-month schedule. As of late December, the project team was approximately 65 percent complete with construction. In addition to Oracle’s management team and DPR, the project team includes Oracle’s construction manager Hamilton Partners LP, shell and core architect HDR Architecture, Inc., interior architect Design, Art & Architects, Inc., a group of outstanding structural, civil, mechanical and electrical engineering consultants, and exceptional specialty subcontractors.
“Oracle’s project manager, David Imel, has done a great job encouraging the team and making good, timely decisions,” notes DPR’s Project Manager, Jon Bloom. “The big success story is how a great team is executing a well thought-out plan.”
