Laying the Foundation

DPR’s 5-Year Base Camp

Just as Rome wasn’t built in a day, our mission to be one of the most admired companies by the year 2030 and vivid descriptions will most likely not be accomplished within the next decade or two. However, we always strive to exceed expectations and know that the best means for reaching and exceeding our objectives-whether it’s an aggressive project deadline or a seemingly impossible constructibility issue-are upfront planning and collaboration.

Therefore, at this year’s strategic planning meeting, we dedicated a great amount of time to DPR’s “5-Year Base Camp,” which is a five-year stopping point for us to evaluate our progress as we all work towards Mission 2030. And, through the collaborative efforts of everyone at DPR, we identified the following tangible image for the end of the year 2005:

  • We will be the dominant player in every market in which we compete because we have the best people.
  • Our employee survey results will average a 95 percent favorable rating.
  • We will receive national recognition as one of the best companies to work for in the construction industry.
  • Our women and minority recruiting and development programs will be recognized nationally as the standard that others should emulate.
  • Our commitment to an Injury Free Environment (IFE) will result in the lowest incident rate for a general contractor in the United States.
  • Over the next five years, we will improve our profitability by 20 percent per year with 25 percent of our total earnings coming from non-core businesses.
  • We will invest up to $2 million annually toward new business opportunities.
  • By 2005, we will contribute five percent net income before taxes annually for a national youth program founded by DPR.
  • We will sponsor an annual innovation workshop, and we will reserve 50,000 DPR stock options to reward the employees who develop business opportunities that we pursue.
  • Our great results will be recognized and will be prominently featured in national publications at least twice per year.

These are the goals that, overall as a company, we are committed to reaching. Based on these goals, each of DPR’s 15 offices is also creating an individual “5-Year Base Camp” to ensure that we are all moving forward in the same direction. As good as we are, we must always strive to improve. Our customers constantly want more-smarter, faster, better service-and our competitors work hard to out do us. Therefore, we must be focused in our efforts to redefine construction and become one of the most admired companies in the world.
