DPR Begins Construction on Highly Anticipated Riverside Walter Reed Hospital Renovation

DPR Construction (DPR), one of the nation’s leading technical builders focused on highly complex and sustainable projects, celebrated the groundbreaking of the Riverside Walter Reed Hospital (RWRH) expansion and renovation project. Construction is expected to be completed and the hospital will be open to the public in the third quarter of 2018.

“We are embarking on the largest renovation in the history of Walter Reed Hospital,” said Dr. Richard Crowder, chairman of the Riverside Walter Reed Board of Directors. “Patients will be rewarded with a state-of-the-art facility with which we can better care for the citizens of the Middle Peninsula.”

The RWRH project will consist of a new two-story, 54,000-sq.-ft. surgical center with four new operating rooms, two procedure rooms, a pharmacy, pre- and post-operative care, 36 new patient rooms and a new hospital entrance and lobby. The existing emergency department will expand from 6,000 to 16,000 sq. ft., creating room for seven more beds, a new waiting and lobby area, relocation of existing departments, registration and administration suites.

Providing construction management services, DPR is looking forward to mirroring the mission of its client and improving the health of Central Virginia communities by building a space where RWRH can effectively deliver high-quality healthcare.

“For us, it’s not just about the project, it’s about the community,” said Greg Haldeman, a member of DPR’s Management Committee focused on expanding DPR’s Northeast operations. “DPR will do everything we can to make sure the construction of the expansion creates the least amount of impact and disruption possible for the patients of RWRH. Everything that’s available today will remain available throughout the project,” Haldeman said.

Construction and renovation on the facility began this month and will continue in phases until the scheduled completion in 2018. The facility was designed by CallisonRTKL and engineered by Leach Wallace Associates.
