48X Complex Sets New Standard for Outpatient Care

UC Davis Health 48X Complex | Sacramento, California

The University of California, Davis Health (UCDH) 48X Complex is a 262,228-sq.-ft. outpatient surgery center that sets a new benchmark for outpatient care in the United States. As one of the most technically advanced facilities of its kind, the 48X Complex integrates cutting-edge surgical technology, flexible design and sustainable building practices to support a robust and resilient healthcare environment.

Cutting-Edge Surgical Facility

The facility features 14 operating rooms (ORs), multiple of which were designed for robotic procedures. The ORs are universal and fully integrated with advanced IT and video capabilities, allowing for maximum flexibility and adaptability. In addition to surgical spaces, the complex includes four interventional radiology rooms, 59 pre- and post-operative recovery bays, 14 single-occupant 23-hour recovery rooms, 96 clinical exam rooms, and 19 clinical treatment rooms. The building also houses a pharmacy, imaging facilities, physical therapy services, administrative offices and conference rooms.

Building Smarter

Prefabrication played a key role in accelerating the schedule and improving safety. The team used SurePods for repeating bathrooms, Digital Building Components (DBC) for exterior walls, prefabricated more than 80,000 linear feet of interior walls, headwalls for recovery rooms, and prefabricated OR ceilings. These elements were built offsite in controlled environments, minimizing onsite congestion and creating a cleaner, safer jobsite.

Sustainability Commitment in UC Davis Design

The 48X Complex also reflects UC Davis Health’s commitment to environmental stewardship. Designed to exceed the UC Sustainable Practices Policy’s energy efficiency goals, the facility targets LEED Gold certification and aims to operate 33% below the ASHRAE 90.1 standards. Architectural features, such as sunshade fins and frit glass, optimize energy performance in Sacramento’s sunny, dry climate, making the building a model of healthy, efficient and environmentally responsible design.
