The Sky's The Limit

SIMCOM Aviation Training Facility | Orlando, Florida

SIMCOM offers simulation-based training to provide realistic aviation training to professional pilots, operators, and maintenance personnel in general aviation, military, regional, government and cargo operations across the globe. The SIMCOM Aviation Training Facility project is a 95,300-sq.-ft. standalone executive headquarters and training facility on a nearly 5-acre site. The facility houses 12 full-flight simulators of all different fixed-wing models, 18 non-motion simulators, classrooms, corporate office space, and all the associated support spaces such as computer, mechanical and electrical rooms. The building is designed for future expansion to add up to eight full-flight simulators.

Quality Laser Accuracy

The mesmerizing large-scale world map that spans the terrazzo entryway floor was one noteworthy distinguishing feature of work on the project. Installing the map-insert into the terrazzo required much preparation, including shot blasting for moisture mitigation, crack isolation mesh and epoxy, and surveying the floor for levelness. The DPR team set leveling pucks to act as guides, and spray paint was applied to transfer the pattern onto the floor. Once the map was set, the team verified the layout based on the architect’s design using LightYX technology. LightXY is an interactive field laser tool that projects 2D/3D blueprints on any surface, and for this effort, it ensured that the map was scaled, proportionate, and centered in the lobby space. After the team set all the pieces, they adjusted the surrounding millwork islands and column covers to match as-built conditions to achieve visual symmetry. They then applied epoxy glue and verified the inserts to confirm nothing was moved prior to pouring. The team poured the land areas first, then used a Dremel to wipe along the edges for cleaner lines, and finally poured the oceans to complete the globe and let it sit to set and dry. The use of LightYX is a great example of how DPR leverages our Field Technology Group to ensure that distinguishing features are executed with cutting-edge means and methods to produce the highest degree of quality.
