Facility of the Year Winner Roars Back to Life
World-class team delivers—and redelivers—largest drug manufacturing facility of its kind for Genentech
UCSF Medical Center at Mission Bay won ENR’s Best of the Best Healthcare award. The eight-year, $1.5 billion project used a modified integrated-project-delivery (IPD) method to keep the schedule and budget under control, including co-locating the owners, designers, contractor and 17 subcontractors in a 12,000-sq.-ft. “big room” trailer. In 2015, the medical facility was also named ENR California’s Best Healthcare Project in Northern California.
The DPR Foundation presented the Boys & Girls Clubs of Greater Dallas with $25,000. Plans for this donation include creating an Early Childhood Development center, reconfiguring the front entrance for safety and easier accessibility, as well as renovating the kitchen for more expansive food service. All these upgrades will allow the Boys and Girls Club to increase its capacity to serve more children.

This summer, DPR celebrated the topping out of its 500,000-sq.-ft. Facebook Fort Worth Data Center. With the help of subcontractor team members, the new building tops out after more than one million man-hours, 6,500 tons of steel, 18,00 crane picks and 72,000 bolts.
The Banner University Medical Center Phoenix Emergency Department Expansion and New Patient Tower project has team members from Banner Health, DPR, HKS Architects, Inc. and multiple trade partners working collaboratively in a single “big room” space on site. This allows the team to leverage one another’s unique expertise in real time to work through challenges quickly and explore out-of-the-box problem solving. Slated for completion in 2018, the big room environment has supported millions of dollars in project savings to date. The team unanimously agrees that the success of the project is directly tied with an integrated daily work model.
DPR Tampa employees presented a $23,000 check to the Moffitt Cancer Center. Proceeds were raised from the office’s annual “Building Great Communities” spring golf tournament.
Shriners Hospital for Children celebrated with a topping out ceremony in January. The medical center will include an ambulatory surgical center, clinical, diagnostic, outpatient surgery and rehabilitation units, which will help bring exceptional specialty pediatric care to millions of children and families in the greater Pasadena area and across the Southwest, regardless of the families’ ability to pay.
The DPR team on the Lucile Packard Children’s Hospital Stanford project helped convert the hospital cafeteria into a jungle-themed prom with a DJ, dancing and carnival games. The team was truly energized by how excited the kids were to enjoy themselves and be more than “patients” for the day. The prom is just one example of the DPR project team’s high level of community involvement, as they build the nation’s most technologically advanced, family-friendly and environmentally sustainable hospital for infants, children and expectant mothers. Ranging from building balsa wood models, visiting the hospital school, dressing up and painting faces for a Halloween “Trick or Treat Trail,” to visiting with Packard Children’s “Patient Heroes,” the team has found that their volunteer efforts offer them the unique opportunity to interact and open two-way communication with the end users that the hospital will ultimately be impacting—patients, parents, teachers, nurses, doctors and hospital staff.
More than 150 medical professionals, hospital leaders, city officials, design and construction partners joined together to celebrate the ceremonial groundbreaking of Baptist Health Jacksonville’s MD Anderson Cancer Center, a nine-story, 330,000-sq.-ft. facility.
On the world’s largest outdoor shake table at UC San Diego, DPR erected the tallest cold-formed, steel-frame structure ever to be tested on a shake table. The six-story building withstood a simulation of 150% of 1994’s 6.7-magnitude Northridge, California earthquake, shaking and rocking, but remaining structurally intact and safe. The project is part of a $1.5 million three-week series of tests, analyzing how cold-formed steel structural systems perform in multi-story buildings located in high seismic hazard zones. Prior to this test, the largest building ever studied was a two-story residential structure in 2013.
Chinese Hospital unveiled its new Patient Tower in April with a grand opening and ribbon cutting celebration. The last remaining independent institution of its kind in San Francisco, Chinese Hospital was truly built by the community and for the community. The most densely populated area west of Manhattan, San Francisco’s Chinatown has provided a vibrant, bustling and logistically challenging setting for the DPR team since the project broke ground in 2012.
Clemson University’s new Football Operations Building will be a 142,500-sq.-ft. facility including coaches’ offices, team meeting rooms, recruiting areas, student-athlete/coaches locker rooms, a weight room, training room, hydro-therapy area, equipment room, dining areas and associated support spaces. The team is so excited that the head coach himself, Dabo Swinney, took part in Clemson’s version of “Undercover Boss” and disguised himself as a laborer to get a sneak peek of the facility!
DPR’s passion for safety resulted in the idea to hold the region’s first Southeast Safety Summit in June. Attended by a mix of 200 trade partners, customers, government officials, self-perform work leaders and DPR employees, the summit featured guest speakers and break-out sessions. Building on DPR’s culture of safety, the meeting focused on promoting an injury-free environment across projects.
Carl Hartwick and the JV team at the NEXCOM project located in Virginia Beach was recognized by the Department of the Navy Naval Facilities Engineering Command, Mid-Atlantic Safety Award 3rd Quarter of 2016 for exceeding 100,000 hours of mishap-free construction on the NEXCOM Headquarters Consolidation project.
DPR affirmed its commitment to a culture of safety through participation in OSHA’s National Safety Stand-Down in May. DPR’s offices and jobsites across the country participated in Stand-Down initiatives, including safety discussions and trainings aimed to raise awareness of preventing fall hazards. DPR approaches safety as a value and focuses on in-depth training that instills and encourages safe behaviors throughout the company and every project team, including owners, architects and subcontractors. Over the last five years, DPR’s OSHA recordable incident rate averaged 1.09, based on more than 27 million total hours worked, making DPR one of the safest contractors in the country.
You may have heard of topping out, but what about bottoming out? Well, that’s exactly what happened at the University of Texas School of Business project site. At 80 feet, this was one of the largest and deepest excavations ever completed in Austin.
NINE15, Tampa’s newest residential tower broke groundin February. The tower will include 362 apartments and 8,000 sq. ft. of retail space, as well as a deck with pool and garden area.
DPR’s Pasadena office moved into its new space at 88 West Colorado Blvd. The space—targeting LEED-CI Gold certification—boasts a front row seat to the famous Tournament of Roses Parade.
DPR’s Mid-Atlantic region recently completed two projects—a data center in Ashburn and the Inova Ashburn Healthplex— where the teams reached a collective milestone of 21 months of work injury-free. Both project teams identified communication, discipline and a project-wide commitment to safety as major factors in creating an injury-free environment.
Thanks to a major community service initiative undertaken by a partnership of Spotify, DPR and Rebuilding Together, Kealing Middle school received new sound studios and music mixing equipment. While planning, budgeting and preconstruction for the project began early in the year, construction of the new production studios could only take place over the school’s spring break. The work required over 800 man hours and, like any building project, this one required various custom and sometimes on-the-spot solutions to keep it moving forward.
“We couldn’t have done this project without DPR Construction,” said Kerry Steib, Spotify’s director of social impact. “It wasn’t just their expertise in the pieces of the project they were leading, it was their willingness to find creative solutions, to take on problems, as they arose and to push toward creating the best project possible for these students.”
This spring, DPR volunteers put on a series of after-school workshops for 130 third-through-fifth-grade girls at Girls Inc. of Alameda County clubs in the Bay Area. The workshops were held at four East Bay elementary schools and included hands-on building activities alongside DPR volunteers. The broader message was to model the many paths women can take to achieve a well-paying and satisfying job in the industry. The workshops also encourage and help educate the girls in the art of collaboration and teamwork.
“The volunteers who led the workshops for Girls Inc. opened up an entirely new perspective on careers in the construction industry,” said Nicki Guard, community engagement manager for Girls Incorporated of Alameda County. “The activities allowed for unique insight into the diverse ways that women work in the construction industry.”
DPR was ranked the No. 3 top data center contractor, No. 6 healthcare contractor and No. 10 overall top contractor by Building Design+Construction’s 2016 Giants Report.
DPR’s Washington D.C. area office has officially moved to its new Reston, VA location at 11109 Sunset Hills Road, Suite 200. The office is targeting not only LEED-CI v4.0 Platinum certification from the U.S. Green Building Council, but also Net-Zero Energy (NZE) Certification from the International Living Future Institute.
