DPR Construction, alongside Sharp Rees-Stealy Medical Group, HGW Architecture and local community leaders, celebrated the opening of an $86 million, 60,000-sq.-ft. medical office building expansion, nearly doubling the facility’s original size. The expansion of Sharp Rees-Stealy Otay Ranch will enhance the local community’s access to high-quality care with new and expanded services, advanced technology, and a focus on sustainability.

“A key factor in the success of this two-phase project was the collaborative design-build approach delivered by DPR and HGW Architecture through a unified project team,” said Sigel Candia, project manager at DPR Construction. “This method aligned the design and construction phases of the project, allowing for seamless coordination between all partners.”

Design-build also gave the Sharp team the opportunity to participate in discussions about integrating features to increase the efficiency and sustainability of the building. As a result, the facility uses 20% less energy than the California baseline, estimated to save Sharp HealthCare thousands of dollars in annual utility costs.

Additionally, DPR had to perform the work adjacent to an occupied, fully active medical office building that stayed operational throughout the project.

“Our team worked closely with Sharp, holding weekly meetings to communicate upcoming activities and to collaborate on solutions to minimize disruptions to the center’s daily operations on site and within the surrounding area,” Candia said. “This proactive planning helped maintain continuity of care for community members relying on the facility for care.”

The project features two distinct levels with different specialties. The lower level features a state-of-the-art urgent care center, advanced radiology services and a new lab. The second level houses specialty departments, including oncology, dermatology, audiology and physical therapy for adults and children.

The expanded Sharp Rees-Stealy Otay Ranch medical center opened its doors on April 7.

Long a national leader in sustainable construction, DPR’s multibillion-dollar portfolio of green buildings is highlighted with hundreds of projects that have achieved industry-leading standards and pushed the boundaries of what level of high-performance can be achieved at market rates.
