The healthcare lexicon has recently adopted the term “phygital,” which refers to blending physical and digital experiences to enhance patient care and engagement. It combines traditional in-person healthcare services with digital technologies to create a seamless and integrated experience, often accompanied by a coordinated, omnichannel approach to delivering patient care and communication.

As technology improves and healthcare providers replace or update aging facilities, health systems, providers, and patients seek innovative methods of enhanced care delivery. This modernization includes updating the facilities and the technology used within them and looking ahead to the potential for AI and cybersecurity needs.

In this multi-part series of Constructing with Care, DPR’s podcast focusing on healthcare construction, we’re joined by Carl Fleming, healthcare strategist at DPR, Laura Wilt, senior vice president and chief digital officer at Sutter Health, Clara Guixa, vice president of applications and deputy Chief Information Officer at Boston Children’s Hospital.

In Part 1, guests talk about how technology impacts patient outputs, the “phygital” world of healthcare that blends the physical and digital worlds, and how builders and administers alike need to take into consideration geographic, cultural, and technical needs of a healthcare building project.

In Part 2, our healthcare experts continue the conversation about the people involved in the use of technology in healthcare, including patients, families, clinicians, nurses, and even hospital management. They also discussion the importance of partnerships between all of these stakeholders, including builders, and taking all perspectives into consideration when having these conversations about what is best for the project.

In Part 3, Fleming, Wilt and Guixa conclude the discussion talking about the investment the industry and the country has made in technological advancements in healthcare. That includes the cost effectiveness of building its own technological innovations versus buying those innovations. Finally they tackle Artificial Intelligence and how it is incorporated not only into the built environment of a healthcare space, but the innovations that help providers impact patient outcomes in an industry that is so people-focused.
