DPR Construction, Inc. Participates in Rebuilding Together Seattle

Rebuilding Together Seattle (formerly Christmas in April* Seattle) is an affiliate of Rebuilding Together U.S.A., the leading national organization that, in partnership with members of the community, rehabilitates the houses of low-income homeowners, particularly the elderly, individuals with disabilities, and families with children so they may continue to live in warmth, safety and independence. After months of planning and preparation, Rebuilding Together culminates in a national Rebuilding Day on the last Saturday in April. Volunteers from all ages, faiths and walks of life come together to help their neighbors in the American barn-raising tradition.

DPR Construction has once again sponsored a house for Rebuilding Together (Formerly Christmas in April.) Whereas most Rebuilding Together projects are homes of low-income, elderly or disabled homeowners, this year’s project was the University District Youth Center. The UDYC is a day-center that provides various services to homeless youth in the University District, including GED schooling, job skills and job search services, youth counseling, etc. For many homeless teens in the area, the UDYC provides the only place where they can eat a warm meal, take a hot shower, obtain their GED, etc.

The Center has been trying to renovate the basement for several years which would allow them to: use a brand new washer and dryer donated a few years ago, but which has not had the proper electrical services; meet current fire codes; create office space so students may start a business based in the UCYC; and create more efficient storage areas which will allow them to take and manage additional food and clothing donations.

Rebuilding Day provided the most progress, as always. Walls, floors and stairs were painted, new flooring, doors, storage units, were installed and all projects have been completed!
